Home / Stories / Best Outdoor Dining in the ‘Burbs (The ‘Not-in-Jackson’ Edition)

BOJ would like to send a buffet of love to the ‘burbs with Best of Jackson’s roundup of great restaurants with outdoor dining spaces that are non in the City of Jackson proper. Before the heat takes over and drives us all inside, visit these eateries in locales with a significantly lower potholes-to-people ratio.

Beagle Bagel (Madison, Jackson, Ridgeland)

What if you created a bagel recipe for your picky puppy that he and everyone else loved, then you opened a restaurant (or three) and dedicated it to the humble bagel? It’d be one of the Jackson area’s favorite places for breakfast and lunch! Beagel Bagel has repurposed this breakfast bread for sandwiches and pizza as well as perfected the art of chicken salad. It’s doggone good. (Yep. We said it.)

While the Highland Village location is nice (and, yes, in Jackson itself), the Ridgeland and Madison locations are equally spiffy, comfortable and a happy place for breakfast, lunch or an afternoon snack.

Burgers & Blues (Ridgeland)

It’s hard to pick a favorite from Burgers & Blues menu. Everything is fresh and delicious. Fresh-ground beef is delivered twice a week and everything from buns to burger dressings come in daily. No matter what you choose, you can enjoy southern classics and live entertainment on the large outdoor patio. Come hungry, though. The burgers are huge. You won’t have the blues when you get back home, but you’ll probably need a nap.

Georgia Blue (Flowood, Madison*)

The blue-plate lunch draws a crowd at this Flowood restaurant, so it’s no wonder it was crowned Best Plate Lunch by BOJ voters. The restaurant’s line of sauces has a huge following and is now available for sale at area grocers. And you must try their fried turnip greens. Really, y’all. We don’t know why you’re still sitting here. But since you are, you should also know that the Flowood location also features outdoor dining for your springtime enjoyment.

Krilakis (Ridgeland)

Krilakis was voted one of the Best Greek Restaurants by BOJ voters. Greek gyros and salads are their specialties. The food comes out quickly and the price point is about $10, so it’s a perfect spot for lunch on the run. Try to slow down a little and savor your food on the outdoor patio. If you’ve got time to dine, bring your own wine (no corking fee, glasses and corkscrew provided) and leave some room after your meal for the baklava.

Mississippi Legends Sports Bar (Flowood)

Kids eat free on Wednesdays, so if you come into Legends to catch the game with friends, make it a family affair and bring the children. Legends is part restaurant/part sports bar with lots of televisions, video games at each table, a solid selection of beer, full bar, good food and a family-friendly atmosphere. The jalapeno cream cheese burger is a big hit.

McB’s Bar and Grill (Ridgeland)

McB’s has been a reservoir staple for more than 30 years. The cheese fries, onion rings and fried jalapenos are must-have apps, and the BLT is topped with lots of bacon and a fried green tomato.  This old school burger and beer joint has lots of live entertainment Friday through Sunday, ladies’ nights every Wednesday and karaoke on Tuesdays and Thursday..  Happy hour is Monday-Friday from 3-7 p.m.

Nagoya (Madison, Jackson*)

Nagoya’s vast menu includes standard fare such as chicken teriyaki, pan-fried dumplings and a hibachi menu with items such as shrimp, steak and scallops, but it also has some dishes that scream “Jackson,” including the oyster tempura and BBQ squid. Choose from their large selection of signature sushi rolls, order something to drink from their unique bar and enjoy it all on the outdoor patio. (*No outdoor dining at Jackson location.)

Papito’s Grill (Flowood, Madison, Jackson)

All three Jackson metro area locations have nice patios with ample outdoor seating. The Fajitas for Two is enough to feed four. Their signature queso is cheese heaven. Happy hour is all day Sunday-Thursday and includes two-for-one house margaritas. And we hear that drinking one Papito’s Monster Margarita before watching Underworld 3: The Rise of the Lycans makes the movie almost bearable. We will further test this hypothesis and publish the results of our research here for peer review.

Shucker’s Oyster Bar (Ridgeland)

Shucker’s serves oysters all year, but when the weather warms up, this summertime hot spot is in its prime. The atmosphere is laid back but never boring. Sombra Mexican Kitchen (Ridgeland)

Aside from the amazingly good guacamole and piled-high nachos, one thing that stands out at Sombra Mexican Kitchen is the excellent customer service. Hang out on the outdoor patio and have the delicious steak fajita (with combo of jumbo shrimp if you’re serious). During happy hour–Sun-Fri, 3-6 p.m. and Sat, 11 a.m.-3 p.m.–order a flight of margaritas, house margaritas for $5 or any beer at half-off regular price.

Confession: we admit that we were totally impressed by the real hand towels in the restrooms. It’s the little things, people.
