Home / Stories / Best Outdoor Dining in Jackson: The ‘Not-In-Fondren’ Edition

We love Fondren. It was voted Best of Jackson’s Best Tourist Attraction and one of the Best Reasons to Live in Jackson for 2015.

But the entire Jackson metro area has a lot to offer. The eclectic mix of neighborhoods, architecture, people and cuisine make the capital city unique.

And there is no better time of year to enjoy outdoor dining on the patio at these non-Fondren Jackson restaurants. (We’ll publish two other round-ups–one for Fondren and one for the ‘Burbs–soon!)

Beagle-Bagel-logoBeagle Bagel (Highland Village, Jackson)*

According to legend, Beagle Bagel started in the Delta when a pet-owner concocted a bagel recipe for a picky pooch that refused to eat anything else. The product was popular with the pup and people, and Beagle Bagel was born!

Whether or not that’s true, it’s a great story. And what’s definitely true, as readers attest, is that Beagle Bagel has some of the best sandwiches in the area. Plus, great “see and be seen” patio seating at the Highland Village location.

*Beagle Bagel also has locations in Madison and Ridgeland.

BRAVO! Italian Restaurant and Bar (Highland Village, Jackson)

Known fact: “al fresco” is Italian for “go eat that outside.” Or something like that. So, when in Rome…or in Highland Village in Jackson…have lunch on the veranda (that’s Italian for “porch,” y’all) at BRAVO! Italian Restaurant and Bar.

The fine Italian restaurant features wood-fired pizzas, handmade pastas, gourmet entrees and more. In addition to its traditional gourmet lunch selections, BRAVO! has recently added a gluten-free menu, so mangia bene!

Fenian's3Fenian’s Pub (Belhaven)

Jackson’s authentic Irish pub promises “Hearty Food. Stout Libations. A Hundred Thousand Salutations.” With a greeting like that, it’s no wonder Fenian’s is a BOJ voter favorite.

A previous version of this roundup stated that Fenians offers lunch during the week, but alas, we were mistaken. But for the after-work and weekend dining crowd, the pub kitchen serves up a combination of traditional Irish dishes and delicious bar food. Stop by after work and have a pint or two on Fenian’s welcoming patio.

Hal & Mal’s (Downtown Jackson)

Hal & Mal’s, a self-described “upscale honky tonk,” has been serving downtown folks in the old GM&O building since 1985. Trays carrying Gulf and New Orleans style staples (Seafood, Tamales, Myrtis’ Bayou Gumbo, Friday Seafood Soup, Hal’s Soup Du Jour, and much more) flow out of the kitchen in a constant stream of controlled chaos.

A cozy courtyard located just off the brew pub invites you to brunch and linger on the weekends; it’s also available for special events and parties.

Steve’s Downtown Deli (Congress Street, Downtown Jackson)

Specials on Steve’s lunch menu are in high rotation. Every day, there is a new plate lunch or quiche. New sandwiches rotate onto the chalkboard menu as old favorites take a short hiatus. But everything is delicious and soon, new additions become staples, like the lunch regulars from downtown businesses who frequent the eatery. It only takes a few visits for everyone behind the counter to know your name.

Bonus: you can network while you eat at one of three outdoor tables. But get there early. That’s prime seating.
