Martin’s Restaurant & Bar

Martin's2Martin’s Restaurant & Bar has literally been around the block a time or two. The bar has relocated twice, including its current location on State Street, but has always been within walking distance of its original location on Silas Brown.

Martin’s boasts one of the biggest beer selections in the area and a diverse crowd spanning generations that changes as the hours go by. It’s been said that you can set your watch by who walks in the door. And they are loyal. The current owner was once a regular who bought the 60-year-old establishment after the original owner became ill.

BOJ Fun Fact: Owner Calvin Stodghill jokes that he has actually considered changing the bar’s name to “Martin’s Adult Day Care.”

Sunday Hours

One Block East

One-Block-Eas2One Block is best known for two things: live music and Bad Ass Burgers. And with a kitchen that stays open until 2 a.m., One Block has bar food down to a science. Its recently changed menu includes the Original Jackson Cheese Steak (banana peppers with diced portobello mushroom and secret sauce), Sweet Corn poppers (like sweet corn casserole in a bite-size nugget), Mac and Cheese Pepperjack Poppers and Pickle Fries (battered and deep-fried julienned pickles).

Another thing that sets One Block apart is its revolving selection of house drinks, like Ghost Blood, Love Spell and Blockade. Owner Mike Ford is proud that his bar has “one of those environments that has no expectations. Everyone knows you here. Everyone is comfortable.”

BOJ Fun Fact: One Block is located in what used to be the automotive repair shop of the old Cadillac dealership. The signature garage door is original to the dealership and now serves as the main entrance into the bar.

Sunday Hours
Bar: 7 p.m.-2 a.m.
Kitchen: open until 2 a.m.
Drink specials: $1 Traveler beers, $2 Flat Tires and Reds and $3 16 oz domestic beers (while supplies last)

Sam’s  Lounge

If you want to know where area bartenders and wait-staffers hang out, come to Sam’s Lounge. Located at the end of Canton Mart Road, the unpretentious bar is attached to an old hotel tucked under the I-55 overpass.

Sams_LoungeSam’s boasts no happy hour, no drink specials and no kitchen. What you will find are whiskey and pool and music. The newly-remodeled lounge has four pool tables (six games for $5), an unrestricted internet jukebox, friendly service, a fully-stocked bar and the newest version of Golden Tee.

BOJ Fun Fact: After a law requiring bars to have kitchens passed several years ago, the 30-year-old bar was grandfathered in. That’s why Sam’s Lounge doesn’t have a kitchen.

Sunday Hours:
Bar: 6 p.m.-2 a.m.
Kitchen: No kitchen but plenty of pool tables
